Videogame Retrospective: The first Farcry (2004)

The Farcry series of games hold a unique position among the first person shooter genre--blending tactical and Stealth elements with the traditional run-n-gun playstyles which results in both accessible and addictive gameplay experiences that also warrants a huge replay value. But after nearly two decades' worth of Videogames, there's several reasons why the first game in the series, Farcry (2004), is still one of most true-to-form experiences from the franchise and is actually the most Farcry game in the series, both in terms of themes and the overall gameplay experience. And that's what this article is all about.   What makes the Farcry series of FPS' stand out from most other shooters is that these games are characterized by an underlying relationship between the player and the environment, or the world where the game is taking place. In a way, the World becomes a character of it's own, which really drives home the point that the player is stranded in a farawa...

Why You Should Play Crysis 2 Remastered

Ever since Crysis came out back in 2007, I've been an ardent fan of the game and later on, of the entire series as a whole. The first Crysis was nothing like I had ever seen and offered a level of gameplay freedom and dynamics that haven't really been surpassed in the first person shooter genre ever since (seriously)----from fully emergent moment-to-moment gameplay to the unprecedented level of interaction and possibilities it handed the player at any given point, Crysis is a timeless and genre-redefining experience that still stands out in a league of it's own even after more than 15 years of it's release.   And after the news came out that the inevitable sequel of Crysis is coming out in 2011, it instantly became one of the most hyped games for me and I remember reading every little nugget of development news and information that I could find on the game back then. And looking back after all these years, Crysis 2 still remains one of the most anticipated games for m...

The Next Crysis...

The name ‘Crysis’ gets largely associated as a glorified tech marvel, a showcase for the most expensive and extravagant graphics hardware of the 2007-2015 era, but what often gets overlooked is that the Crysis series of games also stand out as some of the most innovative and genre-redefining experiences in the history of First Person Shooters. In fact Crysis, a game that was released waay back in 2007, is still unsurpassed when it comes to the sheer interactivity and gameplay possibilities that you can get out of an FPS, sounds unbelievable but true. Even in the age of full Path Tracing and all the other technological breakthroughs of today, Videogames haven’t really evolved as much as the corporate-industry-juggernaut would have us believe, especially in terms of pure gameplay. The Crysis sequels succeeded in bringing the core gameplay theme to a much more smaller and tighter scale, while still retaining a significant chunk of the gameplay variety. And this is how ...

A Crysis in Wasted Opportunities

It was 2009 when I bought Crysis, because my hardware was not capable enough to run the game when it came out in 2007. After 5 minutes of starting the game, I knew I had made the right choice. Crysis was an amazing experience unlike any other fps I had played and I'm not just talking about the ultra realistic graphics. After the initial tutorial when the game told me to disable a jammer in the huge & lush environments of the Lingshan island, giving me ample freedom to do it as I see fit, I knew I was in for a treat. I loved every second of the campaign. I have played many great fps's over the years but Crysis was the only one I replayed almost a dozen times, and got the same amount of fun every single time. The lush open environments, the sandbox gameplay, the brilliant & sometimes downright cunning A.I and the versatile suit functions created an "emergent" element that was both unpredictable & fresh. The realism offered by Cryengine 2, I...
