In the vividly imagined realm of comic
books, there's a place for everyone, regardless of their origin and
purpose. Well, almost everyone cause there exists a very select
number of characters who are so disproportionately powerful that it's
incredibly difficult to craft a story around them. To create a
feasible story you need conflict and there are not a lot of
characters in the entire comicdom that can actually give them a sense
of threat or challenge. As a result, they have been used pretty
scarcely, in very few one-off story events and then left untouched.
While some of them have generated a huge
fan base over the years, their overpowered nature prevents them from
appearing in the mainstream comic book story lines. So without
further ado, here's a compilation (in increasing order of power
levels) of some of the most powerful characters ever conceived in
comic book history. In fact, they are so damned powerful that even
the writers have decided to leave them alone.
10. Trion Juggernaut: When it comes to Earth based heroes and
villains in the Marvel universe, Juggernaut holds the crown of the
most physically intimidating character. But in this incarnation of
Juggernaut, Marvel made him as powerful as they possibly could.
Briefly appearing in Uncanny X-Men #369, Trion Juggernaut was
infinitely stronger than his old self, so much so that he was
effortlessly punching through entire dimensions.
The source of Juggernaut's immense
physical strength is an Elder God named Cyttorakk (a multiple galaxy
buster in his own right). Normally Juggs can only use a very small
portion of Cyttorakk's power but as Trion Juggernaut, he was in
possession of almost all of it, making him powerful enough to shatter
time and space itself, and that's just one of the reasons why he is
so terribly overpowered.
9. Superman Prime: An alternate version of Superman from
Earth-prime (a parallel version of Earth), Superman Prime is one of
the most feared (and stupid) adversary in the entire DC Multiverse.
As his younger self, also known as Superboy Prime, he was
already pretty much unstoppable. He tore through the entire Justice
League and the Green Lantern corps multiple times and all of them
together couldn't do much except annoy him. Similar to Trion
Juggernaut, Superboy Prime also busted through reality multiple
times.
But after absorbing the Oa-n energy,
the grown up Superman Prime became even more powerful than his
younger self. Appearing only in a couple of issues in the Countdown
to Final Crisis miniseries, Man prime didn't get a lot of time to
shine but in that short span he casually destroyed a parallel Earth
by just flying through it and at the end of his appearance, he
managed to tank (receiving an attack without taking any damage) an
explosion that wiped out almost an entire universe. This incredible
feat alone puts him as one of the most powerful characters ever
created in comic book history.
8. Kal Kent: Also known as Superman One Million,
Kal Kent has displayed some of the most incredible feats in the
entire DC Multiverse. Basically, all of the insane feats performed by
Trion Juggernaut and Superman Prime are literally child's play for
Kal Kent. Able to leap from world to world in a single bound, Kal
Kent once held together an entire galaxy with his “force vision”
and managed to punch through time in a weakened state. These feats
easily cements his reputation as one of the most overpowered
characters ever created.
7. Silver Age/ Pre-Crisis Superman:
This list is littered with multiple versions of Superman and the
pre-crisis Superman is the sole reason for that. In fact, his power
level was so insane that it had to be taken down several notches to
make Superman a more accessible character to the modern comic book
reader in the first place.
Pre-Crisis Superman makes most versions
of Superman (including Kal Kent) look weak. Boasting some of the most
impossible (and hilarious) feats such as sneezing away an entire
solar system, pulling multiple planets together with a chain, flying
so fast as to damage the fabric of space and time, pre-crisis
Superman is the textbook definition of overpowered.
6. Death Seed Sentry: Death Seed
Sentry hasn't had any appearances outside of his limited ones in the
Uncanny Avengers series and probably has some of the least number of
feats among the characters in this list. But what he did in that
limited run is more than enough to put him this high in this list.
Sentry has always been scarily powerful
but now with the Death Seed, he makes all of the characters before
him totally outclassed (even pre-crisis Superman). Being immune to
all sorts of physical damages, immortal, the most powerful molecule
manipulator in the Marvel Universe, the most powerful telepath, fast
enough to bend space and time and strong enough to stomp Thor while
holding back (the comics version of Thor is incalculably more
powerful than the movie version) and stop the descent of a Celestial,
Death Seed Sentry belongs in a league of his own even among some of
the most overpowered characters in comic book history.
And now, here comes the big guys (and
gals).
5. Mr. Mxyzptlk: An Imp from the
5th dimension, Mxy is an insanely powerful reality warper
who can create, erase and recreate an Universe with just a whim. In
the World's Funnest issue, Mxy destroyed the DC Universe in an
instant, proving not many people in comicdom can go toe-to-toe with
him in terms of raw power. He also appeared in an episode of
Superman: the animated series, albeit in a much lesser
capacity. The full extent of Mxy's powers are as scary as they are
beyond comprehension. He can turn anyone below him in this list into
dust or just erase them from existence.
4. White Phoenix of the Crown:
The Phoenix force is one of the most fundamental and powerful forces
in the Marvel Omniverse. Also known as the spark of creation,
the Phoenix force even had a part in the creation of the Multiverse.
Very few extraordinary people are chosen to be the host of the
Phoenix force throughout all of time. Even though they only had a
small fraction of the entire Phoenix force, the power they've
displayed is enormous----casually destroying Universes, easily
overpowering beings such as Galactus and many more.
Jean Grey as the White Phoenix of the
Crown is the most powerful avatar of the Phoenix force. A multiversal
being herself, to say that she is extremely powerful is really an
understatement as seen in the scan where she is holding an entire
Universe in her hands, healing it.
3. Mad Jim Jaspers: Able to
effortlessly warp reality on a Multiversal scale, Mad Jim Jaspers
once changed an entire Universe to such degrees that it took the
complete destruction of that Universe to stop him. Originally a
British Parliament member, James Jaspers had a mutated brain that
allowed him to warp reality. An Omniversal threat, Jaspers can
restructure all matter and energy and bend or distort space across
dimensions. Basically, his ability to do anything is only limited by
his imagination. At one point, Jaspers was also shown to create life
and resurrect the dead.
2. Molecule Man (Pre-Retcon):
Owen Reece has the power to control all matter and energy across the
Omniverse. Considered as the second most powerful being in all of
Creation, Molecule Man once repaired the entire multiverse with just
a small gesture of his fingers. But even with the power to create
entire galaxies and obliterate several billion Universes in a single
blast, Owen Reece enjoys the simple pleasures of life like staying in
a tiny apartment and watching re-runs of his favorite TV shows. He is the comical proof that absolute power
does not corrupt absolutely.
1. The Beyonder (Pre-Retcon):
The Beyonder may very well end up as the most powerful being ever
conceived in all of genre fiction. With the ability to create or
erase the entire Multiverse with just a thought, the Beyonder was
only seen in the second part of the Secret Wars miniseries
from Marvel. In the words of Molecule Man himself, “The Beyonder,
it seems, on levels unimaginable to me”. Just for a perspective,
The Beyonder can stomp everyone in this list combined without lifting
a finger.
